The Statue of Unity in Gujarat is the world's tallest statue at 182 meters (597 feet), nearly twice the height of the Statue of Liberty. It depicts Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first Deputy Prime Minister known as the "Iron Man of India."
Record-Breaking Monument
The statue was inaugurated on October 31, 2018, on the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel. It is located on the Sadhu Bet island near the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada river.
Engineering and Construction
The statue was designed by Indian sculptor Ram V. Sutar and constructed by Larsen & Toubro. It took 33 months to complete with approximately 3,000 workers. The statue contains 1,700 tonnes of bronze, 18,500 tonnes of reinforced steel, and 210,000 cubic meters of cement concrete.
Tourism Impact
The statue attracts over 7 million visitors annually, transforming the remote tribal region into a major tourist destination.
