Atal Setu: India's Longest Sea Bridge

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, officially named Atal Setu, is a 21.8 km six-lane grade-separated expressway bridge connecting Sewri in South Mumbai to Chirle near Nhava Sheva in Navi Mumbai. It is the longest sea bridge in India and the 12th longest sea bridge in the world.

Designed to handle over 70,000 vehicles daily, the bridge reduces travel time between South Mumbai and Navi Mumbai from 2 hours to just 20 minutes, bypassing the congested Thane Creek routes.

Engineering Excellence The bridge was constructed using advanced orthotropic steel deck (OSD) technology, which allows for longer spans with fewer pillars, preserving maritime navigational routes and marine ecology. A total of 177,903 metric tonnes of steel (equivalent to 17 Eiffel Towers) and 504,253 metric tonnes of concrete were used.

Environmental Considerations To protect the sensitive flamingo habitats near Sewri mudflats, sound barriers and low-noise drilling techniques were implemented during construction. Special eco-friendly lighting is used to avoid disturbing migratory birds.
