India has embarked on an ambitious journey to become a global semiconductor manufacturing hub, with investments exceeding $15 billion in new fabrication facilities.
The Semiconductor Mission
The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), launched with a โน76,000 crore ($10 billion) outlay, aims to position India as a key player in the global semiconductor supply chain. Multiple companies including Tata Group, Micron Technology, and Tower Semiconductor have announced fab projects.
Major Projects
Tata Electronics is setting up India's first commercial semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat. Micron Technology is building a โน22,500 crore ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging) facility in Gujarat. CG Power is working on an OSAT facility in Gujarat.
Strategic Significance
The global semiconductor shortage of 2020-2022 highlighted the critical need for diversified chip manufacturing. India's entry reduces global dependence on Taiwan and positions the country in the most strategic technology of the 21st century.
