India unveiled its first hydrogen fuel cell-powered train, making it one of the few countries in the world to develop this cutting-edge green technology for rail transport.
Hydrogen Revolution on Rails
The hydrogen-powered train, developed indigenously, represents India's commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions. The train runs on hydrogen fuel cells that generate electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, producing only water as a byproduct.
Technical Specifications
The train uses Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cell technology, converting hydrogen into electricity to power electric traction motors. It can achieve speeds comparable to conventional diesel trains while producing zero direct carbon emissions.
Make in India Achievement
The project showcases India's growing capabilities in green technology and aligns with the National Hydrogen Mission launched in 2023, which aims to make India a global hub for green hydrogen production.
Future Plans
Indian Railways plans to introduce hydrogen trains on heritage and hill routes initially, with broader deployment planned across the network. This is part of the mission to make Indian Railways net-zero by 2030.
